Immigration law in Costa Rica governs how a foreigner obtains residency, work permits, visas and citizenship. The most common paths are residency as a pensionado, rentista, investor, or through family ties. Choosing the right category from the start defines the cost, the timeline, and the odds your application is approved.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your Immigration Questions Answered

We provide clear information to help you understand your legal options and what to expect at every step.

The most common are pensionado (a lifetime pension of about $1,000/month), rentista (stable income of about $2,500/month), investor (an investment from about $150,000), and family ties to a Costa Rican. Each has different requirements and timelines.
Once a complete file is filed with the Immigration Authority (DGME), a decision usually takes 3 to 12 months depending on the category and caseload. A well-prepared file from the start avoids the corrections (prevenciones) that add months.
It depends on the category. Pensionado and rentista holders can own a company and receive income but cannot work as salaried employees. Investors can run their business. Salaried work requires a specific work permit.
The current minimum is about $150,000 in real estate, shares, projects, or a registered business in Costa Rica. We confirm the current figure and requirements in your consultation, since the amounts are updated by regulation.
Generally after 7 years of continuous legal residency. It drops to 5 years for nationals of Ibero-American countries, Spain, and Central America, and to 2 years through marriage to a Costa Rican. A Spanish and history test is also required.
